What kind of Mexican Crafts will you discover here? You will find Straw (popotillo), Real Flower Jewelry, Pewter, Plant Fiber Wall Hangings (Tule) and One-of-a-kind Handicrafts.
1. Straw Crafts (Popotillo): The Straw plant called “Popotillo” is formed by a very thin stalk with barely .0394” of diameter. The artisan colors the straw, he cuts it in little fragments, and one by one, with his fingertips, place it side by side, in order to color a painting. This is a folk art that, unfortunately, is fading.
2. Real Flower Jewelry: These miniature flowers are cultivated at a greenhouse located in warm region of Mexico (Morelos). The craftmen preserve their natural beauty in the jewelry using a special procedure that includes the encapsulation in resin. Silver or alpaca are used as a base for the resin capsules.
3. Pewter: This is a metal with a very special brightness that is preserved, without cleaning, for long periods of time. Each handicraft is made with molds of sand that must be broken for obtaining each piece: one mold, one piece. Each craft is also shined by hand.
4. Plant Fiber Wall Hangings (Tule): This is a very unique craft work. The plant used for this handicraft is called “Tule”, and it grows at the Xochimilco Canal, in Mexico City. It is boiled in lime, washed and smashed, so that the artisan obtains a malleable fiber for making different designs. Although it is a rustic work, this wall hangings fits with Mexican modern home décor.
5. One-of-a-kind Craftwork: We only have one piece of each Mexican handicraft exhibited. All of them are made in Michoacán, a state plenty of artisans that had worked with copper for centuries.
